So, this being my first blog post, I thought it would make sense to tell you why I’m writing this and (hopefully) why you’re reading it. I’ll sum it up in one word: Passion. Passion or, for my purposes, the lack thereof, is the thing that separates us from our goals. It’s the one thing that will always drive us to do more, push harder, try where others have failed and succeed even in the face of overwhelming odds. It’s also something that’s exceedingly difficult to find and seems even harder – for most of us – to maintain.
For the purposes of this blog, I’m going to focus upon passion as it relates to our physical well-being and fitness levels but, dear reader, I must warn you, if you travel this road with me, you’ll likely see me wander here and there but, I promise you, we’ll take this journey together and will seek to fill the void left by our sanitized, suburban, cubicle-ridden lives with passion for the things that will get us off our asses and into the streets where we can begin reshaping ourselves as we know we ought.
Before we take another step, let me assure you of two things: 1) I’m on this journey myself and anticipate spending the rest of my life seeking ways to passionately embrace those things that will consistently, and joyfully, get me out from behind a desk and into the open air. 2) I’m the furthest thing from an expert you can imagine. I’m not a personal trainer; I don’t have a degree in kinesiology, psychology or any other type of “ology;” I’m not a professional athlete nor have I ever performed well in the top levels of amateur competition (a couple of years racing towards the back of the pack as a Cat 1 mountain biker is about the closest I’ve come to top step amateur competition); and I don’t have all of the answers.
What I am is a man that wants to be better than what I am today. What I do know is that something is definitely missing. What I can say, without a doubt, is that doing anything without an enduring passion for whatever it is – work, fitness…life – is a recipe for failure.
So I’m going to walk this road to learn about, cultivate and channel the things that make me tick, and endeavor to find out what makes other people tick so, hopefully, I/we can start doing that which the great sage philosopher Dan Patrick has to wisely instructed us to do: Fill our passion buckets!
